FAMILY GAMES / AGES 13–17

Board game nights with teens
that take under 30 minutes.

Ditch three-hour property trading games that end in tears. Here is how to select fast-paced, humorous tabletop games that keep teenagers laughing.

Nothing kills the enthusiasm of a family game night faster than opening a rulebook with 18 pages of fine print. By the time turn four arrives, everyone is glancing at their phones, somebody is losing by a massive margin, and the energy in the room evaporates.

For teenagers, the sweet spot is high interaction, low rules overhead, and fast rounds.

1. Prioritize cooperative or team-based games.

In competitive games, older siblings or parents often dominate, which makes losing frustrating. Cooperative games (where the whole family wins or loses together against the board) remove personal friction and encourage hilarious joint problem-solving. Games work best inside a short, voluntary evening; see our family night ideas with teens.

2. Social deduction and party bluffing.

Teens excel at reading people and love playful deception. Short card-based bluffing games or word-association games provide immense entertainment in 15-minute bursts. The stakes are light, and multiple quick rounds keep the excitement fresh. For nights when games aren’t the draw, try other things to do with teenagers at home.

3. The 2-minute reset rule.

If a game takes more than three minutes to set up or put away, save it for a long rainy holiday weekend. On regular weeknights, choose games that come in small boxes, shuffle quickly, and can be swept back into the box in 60 seconds. When younger siblings want to join, see family activities at home across ages.

End the game while everyone is still having fun. Leaving them wanting one more round is the sign of a successful family night.
