The simplest cardboard box activities for toddlers need one clean box and a few minutes of prep: a tunnel to crawl through, a car to sit in, a posting box, a hide-and-find game, a drum or a box to color. Check the box first, remove staples, tape and packing materials, and stay close while your child plays.
1. Check the box first.
- Pull out staples and peel off plastic tape and labels.
- Remove all packing materials before the box comes out.
- Do any cutting yourself, away from your child, and check the cut edges.
- If your child starts chewing the box or tearing off small pieces, put it away for another day.
2. Six ways to use one box.
- Tunnel: open both ends of a long box, lay it on its side and crawl through together.
- Sit-in car or boat: a box big enough to sit in becomes a car, boat or train. Push it slowly on a carpet or rug, never near stairs.
- Posting box: cut a wide slot in the top and post large lids or blocks through it, then tip them out and start again. This is the same idea as box posting in our indoor activities for toddlers at home.
- Hide and find: hide a favorite toy under an upside-down box and lift it together.
- Box drum: turn the box upside down and tap it with hands or a wooden spoon.
- Coloring box: chunky crayons on the outside of the box, so the “paper” stands up on its own.
Every item you add should be too big to fit in your child’s mouth.
| Idea | Prep | Cleanup |
|---|---|---|
| Tunnel | 2 min | 1 min |
| Sit-in car or boat | 1 min | 1 min |
| Posting box | 3 min | 1 min |
| Hide and find | 0 min | 1 min |
| Box drum | 0 min | 0 min |
| Coloring box | 1 min | 1 min |
3. One box at a time.
Keep one box out and flatten the rest. A single box keeps the play space small and the cleanup quick, which is also the idea behind our mess-free activities for toddlers. When interest fades, try a different way to use the same box another day before bringing out a new one.
4. When the box is done.
Boxes wear out. When yours is soft, torn or damp, flatten it and recycle it together; it can be part of the cleanup. If you want more ideas from what is already at home, see toddler activities with household items.
Questions people ask
What can toddlers do with a cardboard box?
Crawl through it, sit in it, post things into it, hide toys under it, drum on it or color on it. Most of these need a minute or two of setup.
Is cardboard safe for toddlers to play with?
A clean box can be a good play material when you remove staples, tape and packing materials first and stay close. If your child chews it or tears off small pieces, put it away.
How do I make a cardboard box tunnel?
Open both ends of a long box, tape any loose flaps flat on the outside and lay it on its side on a soft floor. Two boxes taped end to end make a longer tunnel.
Plan a box window
In the toddler play planner, choose “A cardboard box” as your material and it suggests a short, flexible plan.
One box can be a tunnel on Monday and a drum on Friday.
