FAMILY DINNERS / HOMES WITH TODDLERS

Family meal ideas with toddlers:
one dinner for everyone.

Cooking a separate meal for a toddler every night is exhausting. Most family dinners can work for a toddler with a few changes to one plate.

The easiest family meal ideas with toddlers are dinners the whole family eats, served in a way a toddler can manage: build-your-own formats, soft cooked vegetables and toppings on the side. Cook once, then adjust one plate by cutting the toddler’s food into small pieces and leaving out the few foods that need extra care at this age.

1. Cook one dinner, adjust one plate.

Instead of a separate toddler menu, plan dinners made of parts: a base, a protein, a vegetable and a sauce. Serve the parts separately on your toddler’s plate so they can see and choose, and cut food into pieces no larger than half an inch. Cook vegetables until soft.

2. Seven dinner formats that work with toddlers.

One dinner, two ways to serve it

These formats also work on busy nights; our guide to dinner from what you already have shows how to build them from the pantry, and how to meal prep for the week covers getting the rice, vegetables and protein ready ahead.

3. Foods to prepare differently for toddlers.

Some foods are a choking risk for young children and should be kept off the toddler’s plate, or prepared differently, until about age 4:

  • Leave off: popcorn, nuts and seeds, raw carrot sticks and other raw vegetables, raw apple chunks, marshmallows, hard or sticky candy, and chunks of meat or cheese.
  • Chop completely: grapes and hot dogs, only if cut into tiny pieces.
  • Spread thinly: peanut butter and other nut butters, never in thick chunks.

Have your toddler sit down to eat and stay with them during meals. Watch older siblings, who may share foods that aren’t safe yet. For allergies or anything specific to your child, check with their doctor.

4. Let them help, safely.

Toddlers can join in with simple jobs while you cook, with an adult close by: rinsing vegetables, tearing lettuce, kneading dough or putting napkins on the table. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove, and know where your child is before you carry anything hot. A drawer or box of safe kitchen toys can keep them busy nearby. If the hour before dinner is the hardest part of the day, see our guide to the toddler witching hour.

5. Plan the week around the formats.

Choose four or five formats for the week and write them on a weekly meal planner. Put leftovers in the refrigerator within 2 hours of cooking, and plan one leftovers night.
